Instructions for Use of Rack-Type Optical Cable Laying Machine

Proper use of a rack-type optical cable laying machine requires careful attention to cable tension, bending radius, lubrication, and handling techniques to prevent damage and ensure long-term performance.

Preparation Before Laying

  • Inspect the cable and drum: Ensure the cable is free from bumps, scratches, or other damage that could compromise performance during installation .
  • Check the route: Remove obstacles, ensure smooth surfaces, and verify that the path is free of sharp edges or debris that could damage the cable .
  • Prepare the machine: Position the rack-type laying machine on stable ground, ensuring the reel is properly mounted with forks perpendicular to the drum to prevent de-reeling issues .

Cable Handling and Laying Techniques

  • Tension control: Monitor and maintain tension within the cable's maximum tensile load to avoid fiber damage . Use automated pullers with tension control if available.
  • Bending radius: Respect the minimum bending radius during installation. For multiple bends during laying, maintain at least 10 times the cable diameter; for final positioning, a minimum of 7.5 times the diameter is recommended .
  • Figure-8 method: For cable runs longer than 40 meters, lay the cable in a figure-8 pattern on the ground to prevent twisting. Flip the cable 360 degrees before continuing the pull .
  • Lubrication: Apply compatible lubricants for runs over 40 meters, especially for lengths exceeding 100 meters, pulling from the middle out to both ends if necessary .

Machine Operation

  • Straight pull: Always use a straight pull; offset pulls or twisting can stress fibers and reduce cable lifespan .
  • Cable guides: Use guides to maintain the recommended bend radius and prevent kinking .
  • Clamping: Attach cables with plastic clamps that have large surface areas, applying gentle pressure to avoid pinching .
  • Monitoring: Continuously observe the cable during laying for signs of excessive tension, twisting, or abrasion .

Post-Laying Procedures

  • Inspection: Check the cable for any damage, kinks, or deviations from the intended path .
  • Cleaning: Clean fiber ends and connectors using optical-grade wipes, swabs, and canned air to minimize attenuation .
  • Documentation: Record the installation details, including tension, route, and any splices or protective elements used .

Safety Considerations

  • Personal protective equipment: Operators should wear gloves, helmets, and safety belts when handling heavy reels or working at heights .
  • Environmental precautions: Ensure the work area is free from toxic gases, and follow local regulations for outdoor or aerial installations .
  • Machine safety: Never leave the let-off reel unattended during a pull, and avoid sudden movements or dropping the reel . Following these instructions ensures that the optical cable is installed efficiently, safely, and with minimal risk of long-term damage, maximizing the performance and lifespan of the fiber optic network.
