Understanding Armored Fiber Optic Cables

This armor can be made of stainless steel, corrugated steel tape, steel wire, aluminum, or Kevlar reinforcement, providing resistance to crushing, bending, abrasion, rodents, and moisture . Armored cables are essential in harsh environments such as industrial zones, outdoor installations, underground conduits, or areas with high mechanical stress .

  2. Bend Radius and Tensile Load: Armored cables require a larger minimum bend radius than standard fiber. Always check the cable's rated tensile load to avoid fiber breakage during pulling .
  3. Pulling Techniques: Avoid pulling directly on the optical fibers. Pull the cable smoothly, preferably from the middle rather than the ends, and avoid twisting or pushing through conduits .
  4. Protection of Cable Ends: Cap or tape bare cable ends to prevent moisture ingress, especially for steel-armored cables .
  5. Routing: Keep cables away from electrical wiring to prevent interference and avoid areas with excessive heat, sharp edges, or moving machinery .
  6. Conduit and Tray Compatibility: Ensure conduits or trays accommodate the armored cable's outer diameter and bend specifications .
