What is the material of the optical fiber core

The core of an optical fiber is typically made of ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with materials like germanium dioxide (GeO₂) to control the refractive index.

Core Composition

The core is the central region of the fiber that guides light through total internal reflection. In most optical fibers, the core is made of ultra-pure glass (silica), which provides excellent transparency and low signal loss over long distances. To adjust the refractive index and optimize light propagation, the silica is often doped with germanium dioxide (GeO₂) or other dopants such as phosphorus or boron in some specialized fibers . Plastic optical fibers (POF) use polymers for the core, typically for short-range, low-speed applications .

Single-Mode vs Multimode Fibers

  • Single-mode fibers (SMF) have a very small core diameter, typically 8–10 µm, allowing only one light path and minimizing modal dispersion .
  • Multimode fibers (MMF) have larger cores, usually 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which support multiple light paths, suitable for shorter distances like data centers .
  • Plastic optical fibers can have cores up to 980 µm, used for short-range communication .

Dopants and Index Control

The refractive index of the core is slightly higher than that of the surrounding cladding to confine light. This is achieved by doping the silica rather than using a completely different material. Common dopants include:

  • Germanium dioxide (GeO₂) – increases refractive index
  • Phosphorus or alumina – used in rare-earth-doped fibers for amplification
  • Fluorine – sometimes used in the cladding to lower its refractive index In active fibers, rare-earth ions such as erbium (Er³⁺), ytterbium (Yb³⁺), or neodymium (Nd³⁺) are added to the core to enable light amplification in fiber lasers or amplifiers .

Summary

The optical fiber core material is primarily ultra-pure silica, optionally doped to control refractive index and enable specific optical properties. Plastic cores are used for short-range applications. The choice of core material and dopants directly affects light guidance, signal loss, and fiber performance in telecommunications, data centers, and industrial applications .
