What type of optical fiber is used in optical cables

Optical cables primarily use two types of fibers: single-mode fiber (SMF) for long-distance transmission and multimode fiber (MMF) for shorter distances.

Main Types of Optical Fiber

1. Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) Single-mode fiber has a very small core diameter, typically 8–9 microns, allowing only one light mode to propagate. This design minimizes signal dispersion, enabling long-distance, high-speed data transmission with minimal loss, often exceeding 40 km without repeaters. SMF is commonly used in telecommunications, long-haul networks, and high-bandwidth applications where signal integrity over distance is critical . 2. Multimode Fiber (MMF) Multimode fiber has a larger core, usually 50 or 62.5 microns, which supports multiple light modes simultaneously. This allows high-speed data transmission over shorter distances, typically up to 550 meters in enterprise networks. MMF is cost-effective for local area networks (LANs), data centers, and short-range connections where long-distance performance is not required .

Materials Used

Optical fibers are made from either glass (silica) or plastic. Glass fibers are preferred for most telecommunications and high-performance applications due to their low attenuation and high bandwidth. Plastic fibers are generally used for very short-range or consumer applications because they are easier to handle but have higher signal loss .

Specialized Fibers

  • Hollow-core fibers: Light travels through air rather than solid glass, reducing latency and nonlinear effects, and are used in experimental high-speed links .
  • Plastic optical fibers (POF): Used in consumer electronics and automotive applications for short-range connections .

Summary

  • Single-mode fiber (SMF): Small core, long-distance, high-speed, low dispersion.
  • Multimode fiber (MMF): Larger core, short-distance, high-speed, cost-effective.
  • Material: Glass for most telecom and data applications; plastic for short-range consumer use.
  • Specialized fibers: Hollow-core or other advanced designs for ultra-low latency or experimental high-speed links . These fiber types are selected based on distance, bandwidth requirements, and application environment, making them the backbone of modern optical communication networks.
