Routers and Optical Splitters

Optical routers direct optical signals between network paths, while optical splitters divide a single optical signal into multiple outputs for distribution.

Optical Routers

An optical router is a device used in fiber optic networks to manage and direct optical signals from one fiber path to another. Unlike traditional electronic routers that convert signals to electrical form, optical routers can operate directly on light signals, enabling high-speed, low-latency data transmission. They are essential in large-scale networks, such as metropolitan or backbone networks, where multiple optical paths need to be dynamically managed. Optical routers often work in conjunction with Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) to connect end-user devices to the broader network .

Optical Splitters

An optical splitter is a passive device that divides an incoming optical signal into two or more output signals, or conversely, combines multiple signals into one. Splitters are widely used in passive optical networks (PONs), including EPON, GPON, BPON, FTTX, and FTTH systems, to distribute signals from a central office to multiple users .

Types of Optical Splitters

  1. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters
    • Use integrated waveguide technology on a quartz substrate.
    • Provide uniform signal distribution across multiple outputs.
    • Suitable for large-scale networks with high stability and low insertion loss.
    • Can support many branching channels, often exceeding 32 outputs .
  2. Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Splitters
    • Made by fusing and tapering two or more fibers to form a waveguide.
    • Cost-effective for small-scale networks.
    • Splitting ratios can be adjusted by controlling the fiber twist and stretch .

Key Parameters

  • Splitting Ratio: Determines how the input signal is divided among outputs.
  • Insertion Loss: Signal power loss due to splitting.
  • Uniformity: Consistency of signal strength across outputs.
  • Isolation: Minimizes interference between output channels .

Applications

  • Optical Routers: Direct traffic in backbone networks, data centers, and metro networks.
  • Optical Splitters: Enable multiple users to share a single fiber line, used in internet, TV, and telephone services, as well as optical sensing and monitoring systems . In summary, optical routers manage the direction of light signals, while optical splitters distribute or combine signals, both playing critical roles in efficient and scalable fiber optic communication networks.
