Principles for configuring three-level distribution boxes

Three-level distribution systems require hierarchical design, selective protection, proper equipment selection, and safe installation to ensure reliable and efficient power distribution.

Hierarchical Structure

A three-level distribution system consists of:

  • First-Level Distribution Box (Main Distribution Board): Installed near the power source, it receives incoming power and distributes it to secondary boxes. It typically contains the main circuit breaker, main leakage protector, voltmeter, and ammeter for centralized monitoring and control .
  • Second-Level Distribution Box (Sub-Distribution Board): Located near power consumption areas or large equipment, it receives power from the main board and distributes it to tertiary switch boxes. It houses branch circuit breakers and branch leakage protectors for selective protection .
  • Third-Level Distribution Box (Switch Box): Positioned close to the electrical equipment, it directly controls one machine or a group of similar equipment, following the “one machine, one switch” principle. It contains isolation switches, circuit breakers, and leakage protectors .

Equipment Selection and Protection

  • Primary Distribution: Use Air Circuit Breakers (ACB) with short-time delay (0.1–0.5s) and rated current 1.2–1.5 times the transformer capacity. Ensure short-circuit breaking capacity exceeds the maximum short-circuit current .
  • Secondary Distribution: Molded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) are used. Thermomagnetic types suit general loads, while electronic types provide precise protection and communication. Motor circuits should use D-type tripping curves .
  • Tertiary Distribution: Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) mounted on DIN rails. Type B for resistive loads and lighting, Type C for mixed loads and sockets, Type D for inductive loads like motors. Leakage protection via RCBO or RCD is mandatory .

Installation Principles

  • Branching Rules: Power must flow hierarchically; no equipment should bypass levels. Main and secondary boards must not connect directly to end equipment .
  • Separate Circuits: Power and lighting circuits should be separated at all levels, with distinct switch boxes and branch circuits .
  • Distance Minimization: Keep distribution distances short. Maximum distance from a distribution board to a switch box is 30 meters, and from a switch box to controlled equipment preferably ≤3 meters .
  • Environmental Safety: Install boards in dry, ventilated, and temperature-stable locations. Avoid harmful gases, moisture, mechanical impact, vibration, or heat radiation. Provide sufficient maintenance space for two people and ensure unobstructed access .
  • Site Selection: First-level boxes should be on higher terrain, dry, and ventilated. Secondary and tertiary boxes should be close to equipment for operational convenience .

Key Principles Summary

  1. Hierarchical distribution: Main → Secondary → Tertiary.
  2. One machine, one switch: No branching at the tertiary level.
  3. Selective protection: Proper ACB, MCCB, and MCB selection with trip curves.
  4. Separate power and lighting circuits.
  5. Minimize distances: ≤30m to switch boxes, ≤3m to equipment.
  6. Safe environment: Dry, ventilated, accessible, and protected from hazards. Following these principles ensures reliable, safe, and maintainable three-level power distribution systems suitable for construction sites, industrial facilities, or large-scale electrical installations .
