Principles of Measurement

Fiber optic sensors operate by modulating light as it passes through an optical fiber in response to an electrical parameter. For current measurement, the Faraday Effect is commonly used: a magnetic field generated by the current causes a rotation in the polarization of light traveling through the fiber, which can be detected and quantified to determine the current's magnitude and direction . Other sensors may detect changes in intensity, phase, or wavelength of light caused by voltage, strain, or temperature variations in the circuit .

Components of a Fiber Optic Measurement System

A typical setup includes:

  • Light Source: Provides a stable optical signal, often a laser or LED.
  • Optical Fiber: Transmits light to and from the sensing region.
  • Sensing Element/Transducer: Interacts with the circuit's electromagnetic field or physical parameter, modulating the light.
  • Detector: Converts the modulated light back into an electrical signal for analysis.
  • Signal Processing Unit: Interprets the optical signal to provide a readable measurement of current, voltage, or other parameters .

Measurement Techniques

  1. Non-contact Current Sensing: The fiber is placed around or near a conductor. The magnetic field from the current rotates the light's polarization, which is measured to determine current without direct electrical contact .
  2. Voltage or Strain Sensing: Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) or interferometric sensors detect changes in light wavelength or phase caused by voltage-induced strain or temperature changes in the circuit .
  3. Distributed Sensing: Multiple sensors can be multiplexed along a single fiber using wavelength division or time-of-flight techniques, allowing measurement at several points in a circuit or system .
