Contact Fiber Optic Temperature Sensor

Contact fiber optic temperature sensors provide precise, EMI-immune temperature measurements in harsh or high-voltage environments, suitable for industrial, laboratory, and medical applications.

Overview

Contact fiber optic temperature sensors use optical fibers coupled with temperature-sensitive materials to measure temperature directly at the point of contact. Unlike traditional electrical sensors, they are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio-frequency interference (RFI), and high-voltage hazards, making them ideal for environments where conventional thermocouples or RTDs fail . These sensors can be non-interferometric, using materials like GaAs, CdTe, or Si, or interferometric, such as Mach-Zehnder or Fabry-Perot types, which offer higher sensitivity and flexible geometry .

Working Principle

  • Non-interferometric sensors: A semiconductor crystal at the fiber tip changes its optical properties (absorption, transmission, reflection) with temperature. Light from a source (LED or laser) passes through the fiber, and the temperature is determined by the modulation of the light signal .
  • Interferometric sensors: Measure phase changes in light passing through the fiber caused by temperature variations, providing high sensitivity and multi-parameter measurement capabilities .

Advantages

  • Electromagnetic immunity: Unaffected by EMI/RFI or microwave radiation .
  • High accuracy and fast response: Typical accuracy ±0.2°C and response times from 2–20 K/s depending on the model .
  • Wide temperature range: From cryogenic temperatures (–270°C) up to high temperatures (+900°C) depending on sensor type .
  • Non-conductive and intrinsically safe: Suitable for explosive or high-voltage environments .
  • Compact and flexible: Can be installed in tight or complex spaces, including embedded applications .
  • Long-term stability: Minimal signal degradation over time, reducing maintenance costs .

Applications

  • Industrial: Transformer windings, switchgears, busbars, high-voltage machinery, chemical plants, and oil-filled equipment .
  • Laboratory and medical: Cryogenic research, NMR scanners, and medical instrumentation .
  • Infrastructure and safety: Fire detection in tunnels, conveyor belts, and large-scale industrial facilities .
  • Aerospace and defense: Engine and avionics temperature monitoring .

Commercial Examples

  • MKS Instruments: Offers fiber optic probes and temperature converters with high accuracy and repeatability, suitable for industrial automation .
  • Yokogawa DTSX: Distributed fiber optic temperature sensors capable of monitoring up to 50 km with high resolution (0.03°C), ideal for predictive maintenance in plants .
  • Neoptix T1: Direct, calibration-free measurement from –270°C to +250°C with EMI immunity, suitable for laboratory and industrial applications .
  • COMEM GaAs sensors: Non-metallic, dielectric probes for high-voltage and RF-intensive environments .
  • Luxtron M-1200: Compact fiber optic temperature converter with a range of –200°C to 450°C, supporting multiple channels and EtherCAT communication .

Summary

Contact fiber optic temperature sensors are highly reliable, safe, and precise solutions for environments where traditional electrical sensors are unsuitable. They provide direct point measurements or distributed sensing, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and enhanced safety across industrial, laboratory, medical, and high-voltage applications. For product selection and technical support, manufacturers like MKS Instruments, Yokogawa, Neoptix, COMEM, and Advanced Energy offer specialized solutions tailored to specific operational requirements .
