Basic Elements of Relay Protection

The basic components of relay protection include the protective relay, current and voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and auxiliary devices for trip control.

Protective Relay

The protective relay acts as the decision-making unit in a power system, detecting abnormal conditions such as overcurrent, under-voltage, or earth faults, and initiating the trip signal to isolate the faulty section with minimal disruption to service . Relays can be electromechanical, static, or numerical (digital), with modern numerical relays offering advanced monitoring, self-diagnostics, and multifunction capabilities .

Current and Voltage Transformers (CTs and VTs)

Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) are used to step down high line currents and voltages to levels suitable for relay operation . CTs provide a proportional secondary current (typically 5A) to the relay, while VTs provide a scaled voltage signal. These transformers ensure the relay can safely and accurately measure system parameters without being exposed to high voltages or currents.

Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are mechanical switching devices that open or close power circuits under normal or fault conditions . They are controlled by the relay to isolate the faulty section. The breaker must match the system's nominal current, voltage, and fault MVA rating. Trip coils in breakers are energized by the relay or auxiliary relays to initiate opening.

Auxiliary Relays and Trip Circuits

Auxiliary relays are used when multiple breakers need to be tripped or when the trip coil current exceeds the relay contact rating . They help safely close the trip coil circuit and handle the inductive load of the trip coil. The relay contacts may operate directly or through these auxiliary relays to energize the trip coil, ensuring reliable operation.

Summary

In essence, a relay protection system consists of:

  • Protective relays to detect faults and make decisions
  • CTs and VTs to provide scaled signals for measurement
  • Circuit breakers to isolate faulty sections
  • Auxiliary relays and trip circuits to ensure safe and reliable operation of the breakers These components work together to maintain system safety, reliability, and continuity of electrical supply.
