What is Multimode Fiber?

Multimode fiber is a type of optical fiber that has a larger core diameter, typically 50 or 62.5 micrometers. This larger core allows multiple light rays, or modes, to travel through the fiber simultaneously. As a result, multimode fiber is well-suited for short-distance applications, such as within buildings or across campus networks, where high data rates are required over relatively short distances .

Types of Multimode Fiber

Multimode fiber is classified into several types based on the ISO/IEC 11801 standard, including:

  1. OM1: 62.5 µm core, suitable for 100 Mbps Ethernet, with a maximum distance of 33 meters for 10 Gbps applications. Typically has an orange jacket.
  2. OM2: 50 µm core, supports 1 Gbps Ethernet and limited 10 Gbps applications, with a maximum distance of 82 meters for 10 Gbps. Also has an orange jacket.
  3. OM3: 50 µm core optimized for laser transmission, supports 10 Gbps up to 300 meters and is commonly used in data centers. It has an aqua jacket.
  4. OM4: Similar to OM3 but with improved performance, supporting 10 Gbps up to 400 meters and 100 Gbps up to 150 meters. It also has an aqua jacket.
  5. OM5: The latest standard, designed for wideband applications, supports multiple wavelengths and is ideal for 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps networks. It has a lime green jacket .
