Understanding Duplex Fiber Polarity

In a dual-fiber setup, two fibers are used for bidirectional communication: one for transmitting data and one for receiving. The key principle is that Tx must always connect to Rx at the other end, regardless of patch panels or cable segments in the channel. If Tx is connected to Tx, the link will fail to transmit data . Duplex patch cords typically follow TIA-568.3-E A-B polarity, which ensures that the transmit signal on one end aligns with the receiver on the other. Fiber connectors have a key to prevent rotation, maintaining the correct Tx/Rx orientation .

Wiring Steps

  1. Identify Tx and Rx ports on your optical module. These are usually labeled on the SFP or SFP+ module.
  2. Use a duplex fiber patch cable (LC or SC connectors depending on your module) with A-B polarity.
  3. Connect the Tx port of the module to the Rx port of the device at the other end.
  4. Connect the Rx port of the module to the Tx port of the device at the other end.
  5. Verify polarity if using patch panels or multiple cable segments to ensure Tx-to-Rx alignment is maintained throughout the channel .

Special Considerations for BiDi Transceivers

If using a BiDi (bidirectional) SFP module, a single fiber can carry both transmit and receive signals using different wavelengths (e.g., 1310nm for Tx and 1490nm for Rx). In this case:

  • Only one fiber is needed.
  • Ensure the wavelength assignment matches at both ends: the Tx wavelength of one module must correspond to the Rx wavelength of the other .
  • BiDi modules simplify cabling but require careful attention to wavelength pairing .

Testing and Verification

After wiring:

  • Power on the modules and check link status LEDs.
  • Use an optical power meter or network tester to verify signal integrity.
  • Ensure no crossed fibers or reversed polarity, which can prevent data transmission . By following these steps, you can correctly wire a dual-fiber optical module with one transmitter and one receiver, ensuring reliable bidirectional communication.
