Purpose of Dual Aggregation Switches

In a three-tier network architecture, the aggregation layer serves as the intermediary between the access layer (edge switches) and the core layer. Deploying two switches in this layer ensures:

  • Redundancy and resiliency: If one switch fails, the other continues to handle traffic, preventing a single point of failure .
  • Scalability: Multiple access switches can connect to the aggregation pair without requiring a full mesh of links, simplifying cabling and network expansion .
  • High availability: Dual hot-swappable power supplies and redundant fans are recommended to maintain continuous operation .

Traffic Management and Connectivity

Each aggregation switch consolidates traffic from multiple access switches and forwards it to the core layer. They can operate at Layer 2 or Layer 3, supporting features such as:

  • Link aggregation (LACP or static) to combine multiple physical links into a single logical connection, increasing bandwidth and failover capability .
