What is WDM?

WDM is a fiber optic technology that combines multiple optical signals onto a single fiber by assigning each signal a distinct wavelength (or color) of laser light. Each wavelength acts as an independent channel, carrying its own data stream without interfering with others, similar to multiple lanes on a highway . At the receiving end, a demultiplexer separates the wavelengths back into individual data streams .

How WDM Works

A basic WDM system consists of:

  • Transceivers: Convert electrical signals into optical signals at specific wavelengths.
  • Multiplexer (Mux): Combines multiple wavelengths onto a single fiber.
  • Demultiplexer (Demux): Separates the combined wavelengths at the receiver.
  • Patch cords and fiber: Connect the system components . WDM can also support bi-directional communication over a single fiber using wavelength-division duplexing, or use two fibers for uni-directional transmission .

Types of WDM

  1. CWDM (Coarse WDM): Uses wider wavelength spacing, cost-effective, suitable for shorter distances like metro networks .
  2. DWDM (Dense WDM): Uses closely spaced wavelengths, designed for long-haul, high-capacity transmission, forming the backbone of the internet .
