Dual-channel optical cable laying process

The dual-channel optical cable laying process involves careful planning, site preparation, controlled cable handling, proper pulling or blowing techniques, and precise termination to ensure optimal performance and minimal signal loss.

1. Planning and Site Preparation

Before installation, conduct a site survey to assess the route, terrain, and potential obstacles. Obtain necessary permits from municipal or state authorities, including rights-of-way for underground or aerial installations, and prepare detailed route schematics using CAD tools . Determine whether the cable will be laid underground, aerially, or through ducts, and plan for protective measures such as conduits, innerducts, or micro-trenching .

2. Cable Storage and Handling

Store cable reels on flat, firm surfaces to prevent deformation or damage. Keep protective coverings in place until installation, and avoid areas prone to flooding or sharp objects . During uncoiling, use hydraulic or crane-assisted stands to allow free rotation of the reel, always following the marked rolling direction to prevent torsion . For dual-channel cables, ensure both channels are properly aligned and protected during handling.

3. Laying Techniques

Dual-channel optical cables can be installed using pulling or blowing methods. For pulling, use figure-8 loops to prevent twisting and kinking, with loop sizes typically 2–4 meters depending on cable stiffness . Maintain the minimum bending radius (e.g., 10× cable diameter for multiple bends, 7.5× for final bends) to avoid permanent damage . For aerial installations, reinforce cables with Aramid yarn to reduce tension stress . Underground conduits should be buried at 1–1.2 meters depth, or deeper in frost-prone areas .

4. Mechanical Stress Management

Monitor tension and bending forces carefully. Excessive pulling force can damage the cable, especially for armoured or dual-channel types. Avoid sharp bends, high-pressure points, and crossing cables without proper spacing . Temperature variations also affect cable flexibility; handle cables cautiously in extreme heat or cold to prevent thermoplastic deformation or brittleness .

5. Termination and Splicing

After laying, terminate the fibers using connectors or splices. Connectors allow temporary or network equipment connections, while splices create permanent joints . Ensure terminations are clean, aligned, and protected against dirt or mechanical damage. For dual-channel cables, verify that both channels are correctly terminated and tested for signal loss and continuity .

6. Testing and Maintenance

Perform optical testing to measure attenuation, continuity, and signal integrity. Document the installation, including cable routes, splice points, and termination locations. Regular inspections and cleaning of connectors help maintain long-term performance . By following these steps, dual-channel optical cables can be installed efficiently, minimizing mechanical stress and ensuring high-speed, reliable data transmission across both channels.
