ADSS optical cable materials

ADSS optical cables are constructed from optical fibers, strengthening materials, protective layers, and outer sheaths, all designed to be fully dielectric and self-supporting.

Core Components and Materials

1. Optical Fiber Core

  • Material: Silica (SiO₂) and alumina, providing high tensile and compressive strength .
  • Function: Transmits data via light with minimal optical loss.
  • Coating: Acrylates or similar polymers protect fibers from wear, moisture, and corrosion .
  • Configuration: Fibers are arranged in loose buffer tubes or ribbon form, often with excess slack to prevent strain . 2. Strengthening Materials
  • Materials: Fiberglass, carbon fiber, or aramid yarn (Kevlar®) embedded around the fiber core .
  • Function: Provides tensile strength and rigidity, allowing the cable to span long distances without sagging or breaking under wind, ice, or mechanical load .
  • Optional: Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) rods may be used as central strength members for additional stability . 3. Protective Layer
  • Materials: Polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or PE-A (arc-resistant) for high-voltage environments .
  • Function: Insulates and protects the fiber core from environmental factors, electrical tracking, and mechanical damage.
  • Additional Features: Water-blocking yarns or thixotropic gel may be included to prevent moisture ingress . 4. Outer Sheath
  • Materials: Polyethylene (PE), PVC, or dual-layer sheaths for enhanced mechanical protection .
  • Function: Protects the entire cable from abrasion, UV radiation, and environmental corrosion.
  • High-Voltage Adaptation: AT coatings are applied in cables installed on lines ≥35 kV to prevent electrical tracking .

Summary of Material Functions

  • Silica/Alumina fibers: Optical transmission
  • Acrylate coatings: Fiber protection
  • Fiberglass/Aramid/Kevlar®: Tensile strength
  • PE/PVC/PE-A layers: Insulation and environmental protection
  • FRP rods (optional): Structural stability
  • Water-blocking gels/yarns: Moisture resistance ADSS cables are designed to be lightweight, fully dielectric, and capable of spanning long distances between towers without metal support, making them suitable for installation along high-voltage power lines while maintaining optical performance and mechanical durability .
