Double-layer cable tray cutting method

Cutting a double-layer cable tray requires proper tools, safety precautions, and careful execution to maintain structural integrity and prevent injury.

Safety First

Before cutting, always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including Kevlar gloves, safety glasses, head protection, and appropriate footwear to prevent injuries from sharp edges or metal shavings . Ensure the surrounding area is clear of flammable materials, especially if using power tools that generate sparks.

Tools and Materials

  • Measuring tape and marker: Accurately mark the cut line on both layers of the tray .
  • Band saw or power cut-off saw: Ideal for metal trays, providing clean cuts with minimal burrs. Hilti SB 4-A22 is an example of a cordless band saw suitable for low-height, thin metal trays .
  • Angle grinder: Can be used if a band saw is unavailable, but produces more splatter and requires careful handling with both hands .
  • Clamps or vise: Secure the tray firmly to prevent movement during cutting .
  • Deburring tool or metal file: Smooth sharp edges after cutting to prevent injury and facilitate installation .
  • Optional cutting oil: Helps prolong blade life and ensures smoother cuts, especially for thicker trays .

Cutting Procedure

  1. Measure and mark the exact cut line on both layers of the tray. Double-check measurements to ensure proper fit.
  2. Secure the tray using clamps or a vise to prevent movement. Ensure both layers are aligned.
  3. Select the appropriate cutting tool based on material type (metal, fiberglass, or composite). Avoid mixing blades between stainless steel and carbon steel to prevent contamination and galvanic corrosion .
  4. Cut slowly and steadily, following the marked line. For band saws, maintain a consistent feed rate; for angle grinders, handle with both hands and protect surrounding materials from sparks .
  5. Deburr the edges using a file or deburring tool to remove sharp edges and prevent injury during installation .
  6. Inspect the cut to ensure both layers are aligned and structurally sound before installation.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid using torches for cutting, as this can weaken the material and damage surface treatments .
  • If cutting multiple trays of different metals nearby, cover adjacent products to prevent contamination from metal particles .
  • For large or complex installations, consider pre-cutting trays at the factory to save time and reduce on-site risks . By following these steps, you can safely and efficiently cut a double-layer cable tray while maintaining its structural integrity and compliance with installation standards.
