Wiring of the switches reserved in the distribution box

Reserved switches in a distribution box are typically placed on the right side, left unconnected initially, and prepared for future circuits with proper labeling and safety measures.

Placement and Arrangement

In a standard distribution box, circuit breakers are arranged from left to right, with the reserved positions generally placed on the right side of the box . This allows for easy expansion without disturbing existing circuits. Reserved switches are left unconnected but should be physically installed to maintain uniformity and allow future wiring.

Wiring Considerations

  • Incoming Connection: Each switch, including reserved ones, can be connected to the main busbar or left disconnected until needed. When wiring in the future, the incoming phase and neutral wires are connected to the respective terminals of the reserved switch .
  • Wire Color Codes: Follow standard color coding for safety and clarity. Typically, neutral wires are blue, and phase wires are yellow (A phase), green (B phase), and red (C phase), .
  • Wire Size: Choose wire gauge according to the expected load. For lighting and socket circuits, 2.5mm² wires are common, while air conditioning or heavier loads may require 2.5mm² or 4.0mm² wires .
  • Binding and Organization: Use plastic ties to keep wires neat, ensuring uniform spacing and straight runs. This prevents tangling and makes future connections easier .

Safety and Labeling

  • Mark Reserved Switches: Clearly label reserved positions as “Reserved” or “Future Use” to avoid accidental connection or confusion .
  • Inspection: Even if unconnected, perform a visual inspection to ensure no exposed conductors or loose connections exist. This prevents short circuits or accidental contact .
  • Protective Devices: Ensure that the main MCB or RCCB provides protection for the entire distribution box, including reserved positions, so that future connections are automatically safeguarded .

Future Wiring

When a reserved switch is activated for a new circuit:

  1. Connect the phase and neutral wires from the busbar to the switch terminals.
  2. Connect the outgoing wires to the intended load.
  3. Verify proper insulation, secure binding, and correct labeling.
  4. Test the circuit for continuity and proper operation before energizing. By following these practices, reserved switches in a distribution box remain safe, organized, and ready for future expansion without compromising the existing electrical system .
