Multimode fiber optic cables (MMF) allow multiple light modes to transmit simultaneously, making them ideal for short- to medium-distance data communication within buildings and campuses.

Overview

Multimode fiber optic cables have a larger core diameter (typically 50–62.5 µm) compared to single-mode fiber, which allows multiple light modes to propagate through the fiber simultaneously. This design makes MMF suitable for short-distance applications (up to 550 meters) and allows the use of lower-cost light sources like LEDs or VCSELs, operating at 850 nm and 1300 nm wavelengths. MMF is commonly used in data centers, enterprise networks, and campus environments for backbone and horizontal cabling .

Types of Multimode Fiber

Multimode fibers are standardized as OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5, each differing in core size, bandwidth, maximum transmission distance, and typical applications :

  • OM1: 62.5 µm core, orange jacket, LED light source, suitable for 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps Ethernet over short distances.
  • OM2: 50 µm core, orange jacket, LED light source, supports 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 10 Gbps Ethernet.
  • OM3: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, laser-optimized, supports 10–100 Gbps Ethernet with effective modal bandwidth of 2000 MHz·km.
  • OM4: 50 µm core, aqua jacket, laser-optimized, higher bandwidth (4700 MHz·km), suitable for 10, 40, and 100 Gbps transmissions.
  • OM5: 50 µm core, lime green jacket, wideband multimode fiber (WBMMF), supports multiple wavelengths for 40–400 Gbps data rates .

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages:

  • Lower-cost transceivers and electronics compared to single-mode fiber.
  • Easier to terminate and handle due to larger core size.
  • Ideal for high-speed connections over short distances within buildings or campuses . Limitations:
  • Modal dispersion limits maximum transmission distance.
  • Less suitable for long-haul or ultra-high-speed networks compared to single-mode fiber.
  • Performance depends on fiber type and light source used .

Applications

Multimode fiber is widely used for:

  • Data center interconnects and backbone cabling.
  • Campus networks connecting multiple buildings.
  • Fiber to the desktop or telecom enclosures.
  • High optical power applications, such as laser welding or fiber optic spectroscopy .
