Basic Components

An optocoupler consists of two main parts housed in a single package:

  • LED (Light-Emitting Diode): Converts the input electrical signal into light, typically infrared, when current flows through it .
  • Photodetector (e.g., phototransistor): Detects the light emitted by the LED and converts it back into an electrical signal on the output side . The LED and photodetector are separated by an insulating barrier, which prevents direct electrical contact between the input and output circuits, providing isolation and protecting sensitive components from voltage spikes or electrical noise .

Working Principle

  1. Input Stage: When an electrical signal is applied to the LED, it emits light proportional to the signal .
  2. Isolation Barrier: The light travels across a transparent, electrically insulating material, maintaining complete electrical separation between circuits .
  3. Output Stage: The photodetector receives the light and becomes conductive, allowing current to flow in the output circuit. When the LED is off, the photodetector remains non-conductive, effectively acting like an open switch . This mechanism allows the optocoupler to transfer signals without direct electrical connection, preventing interference and protecting low-voltage circuits from high-voltage spikes .

Types and Applications

  • Phototransistor Optocouplers: Most common, where the phototransistor switches on/off based on LED light .
  • Opto-TRIACs and Opto-SCRs: Used for controlling AC loads or triggering power devices while maintaining isolation .
  • Applications: Signal isolation in microcontroller circuits, protecting inputs/outputs, interfacing digital ICs, isolating motor circuits, and preventing electrical noise from affecting sensitive components .
