Function of Pulse Fiber Couplers

Pulse fiber couplers are passive optical devices that split or combine pulsed light signals between fibers, enabling precise control of light distribution in fiber-optic systems.

Core Function

Pulse fiber couplers manage the flow of light in optical networks by either splitting a single input pulse into multiple output fibers or combining pulses from multiple inputs into a single fiber. This is essential in applications such as fiber lasers, amplifiers, and interferometers, where controlled distribution of pulsed light is required for signal routing, monitoring, or amplification .

Operating Principle

The primary mechanism is evanescent wave coupling, where the electromagnetic field of light extends slightly beyond the fiber core. When two fiber cores are brought very close together, the evanescent waves overlap, allowing coherent transfer of light energy between fibers. The coupling strength and splitting ratio depend on the interaction length, core separation, and refractive index profile . Common fabrication methods include:

  • Fused Biconical Taper (FBT): Fibers are twisted, heated, and stretched to bring cores into close proximity, controlling the splitting ratio precisely .
  • Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC): Optical waveguides are etched on a substrate to create integrated splitters with high uniformity and thermal stability, suitable for high-port-count applications .

Applications

  • Fiber Lasers: Couplers extract a portion of the circulating pulse for output or feedback control .
  • Fiber Amplifiers: Dichroic couplers combine pump and signal pulses or remove residual pump light after amplification .
  • Interferometry: Couplers combine or split pulses for precise phase measurements in fiber interferometers .
  • High-Power Systems: Specialized pump couplers combine outputs from multiple high-power diode sources while minimizing losses .
  • Medical Imaging: In Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), couplers split pulses between sample and reference paths to generate high-resolution images .

Performance Considerations

Key metrics include:

  • Splitting Ratio: Percentage of light directed to each output fiber.
  • Insertion Loss: Power loss during coupling.
  • Polarization-Dependent Loss (PDL): Variation in transmission due to polarization states.
  • Directivity: Fraction of input light lost in terminated ports . Pulse fiber couplers are therefore critical for efficient, precise, and flexible management of pulsed optical signals in both research and industrial fiber-optic systems.
