Fiber optic cables use standardized jacket colors to indicate fiber type according to TIA-598-C. For example:

  • Single-mode fibers (OS1/OS2): Yellow jacket, suitable for long-distance communication .
  • Multimode fibers:
    • OM1/OM2: Orange jacket, legacy networks .
    • OM3: Aqua jacket, supports 10/40/100 Gb/s over short distances .
    • OM4: Aqua or Erika Violet, higher bandwidth and longer distances .
    • OM5: Lime green, designed for SWDM applications and high-speed multi-wavelength transmission . Individual fibers within a multi-fiber cable follow a 12-color sequence for identification: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua. For cables exceeding 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with tube and fiber identification, e.g., Fiber #34 is Violet in the Green tube .

Connector Color Coding

Connectors are color-coded to indicate fiber type and polish:

  • Blue connectors: Single-mode with UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) polish, flat endface, low insertion loss .

Adapters must match connector colors: green to green (APC), blue to blue (UPC), preventing misconnection .

  2. Check connector color and polish to ensure compatibility with adapters and mating connectors.

  4. High-density or MPO cables: Use tube and fiber color coding for accurate identification of individual fibers within bundles . By adhering to these color coding standards, technicians can achieve error-free fiber management, faster installation, and reliable network performance.
