Balanced winding relay protection

Balanced winding relay protection detects earth faults and inter-turn faults in three-phase windings by monitoring the balance of currents through line and neutral current transformers.

Principle of Operation

Balanced winding relay protection, often referred to as Balanced Earth Fault (BEF) protection, is designed to protect generators, alternators, and transformers where the neutral may not be externally accessible or where differential protection is impractical . The scheme relies on the principle that under normal operating conditions, the sum of the three-phase currents in a balanced system is zero. Current transformers (CTs) are installed on each phase, and their secondary windings are connected in parallel with a CT on the neutral conductor (if available). A relay is connected across these secondaries .

  • Normal Condition: The currents in the CT secondaries cancel each other, resulting in zero current through the relay. The relay remains de-energized.
  • Fault Condition: If an earth fault occurs within the protected zone, the balance is disturbed. The differential current flows through the relay, which then operates to trip the circuit breaker and isolate the faulty section .

Applications

  1. Small Generators: Often used when the neutral is internally connected and not accessible externally. It provides protection against earth faults in the stator winding but does not respond to external faults .
  2. Inter-Turn Faults: In large generators, duplicate stator windings (S1 and S2) can be monitored using circulating-current CTs. A short-circuit between turns causes unequal currents in the CT secondaries, triggering the relay to clear the generator from the system .
  3. Transformers: BEF can be applied to delta or wye windings, but it requires an earth connection to detect residual currents. In corner-delta transformers without a neutral connection, BEF may not operate unless a resistance grounding or other earth path is provided .

Key Features

  • Selective Protection: Only faults within the protected zone (between line CTs and neutral CT) are detected.
  • Earth Fault Sensitivity: The relay responds exclusively to earth faults, not to load unbalance or phase-to-phase faults unless they develop into earth faults .
  • Integration with Other Schemes: BEF is often used alongside restricted earth fault (REF) or differential protection for enhanced coverage in large generators and transformers .

Limitations

  • Phase-to-Phase Faults: BEF does not inherently protect against phase-to-phase faults unless they result in an earth fault.
  • External Faults: Faults outside the protected zone do not trigger the relay.
  • Neutral Requirement: Effective operation requires a path to earth; unearthed systems may need additional arrangements to detect faults .

Summary

Balanced winding relay protection is a reliable and sensitive method for detecting earth faults and inter-turn faults in three-phase windings. By monitoring the balance of currents through CTs, it ensures that faults within the protected zone are quickly isolated, minimizing damage to generators and transformers while maintaining system stability .
