The simplest relay protection device

The most basic device for relay protection is the electromechanical overcurrent relay.

Overview

The electromechanical overcurrent relay is considered the simplest and most fundamental protective relay used in power systems . It operates by detecting when the current in a circuit exceeds a predetermined threshold and then initiating a trip signal to a circuit breaker to isolate the faulty section . This type of relay is widely used due to its simplicity, reliability, and ability to provide basic protection against overcurrent conditions.

Operating Principle

Electromechanical overcurrent relays typically use coils, moving parts, and induction disks to sense abnormal current levels . When the current exceeds the relay's pickup value, the electromagnetic force moves the disk or mechanism, eventually closing contacts that complete the trip circuit for the breaker . These relays can be designed for instantaneous operation (50) or time-delayed operation (51), allowing flexibility in protection schemes .

Applications

  • Overcurrent protection for feeders, transformers, and busbars
  • Backup protection in combination with more advanced relays
  • Educational purposes to demonstrate basic relay operation principles

Advantages

  • Simple and robust design
  • Long operational life
  • Easy to maintain and test
  • Provides a foundation for understanding more complex relay types, such as static or numerical relays In modern systems, electromechanical relays are often supplemented or replaced by microprocessor-based numerical relays, which combine multiple protection functions in a single device, but the electromechanical overcurrent relay remains the basic building block of relay protection .
