Definition and Purpose

A Potential Transformer (PT) is an instrument transformer used in power systems to measure high voltages safely and accurately. PTs reduce the voltage from the primary high-voltage circuit to a lower secondary voltage that can be safely handled by protective relays, meters, and control devices . This allows relays to monitor voltage levels, detect abnormal conditions, and initiate protective actions without being exposed to dangerous high voltages .

Role in Relay Protection

In relay protection schemes, PTs provide the voltage input necessary for relays to operate correctly. For example, an undervoltage relay relies on the PT to sense the voltage level; if the voltage drops below a set threshold, the relay can trip a circuit breaker to protect equipment . PTs work alongside Current Transformers (CTs), which provide current measurements, forming the essential sensing inputs for protective relays .

PT Secondary Protection

Unlike CTs, where an open-circuited secondary can be harmful, PTs are vulnerable to secondary short circuits, which can damage the transformer. To prevent this, PT secondary circuits are often protected with fuses or miniature circuit breakers. Additionally, PT Fuse Failure Relays can detect blown fuses in the PT secondary and prevent false tripping of relays by comparing voltages on both sides of the fuse .
