Understanding the Universal Fiber Optic Panel

A universal fiber optic panel, such as the Universal Fibre Solution (UFS), is designed to accommodate multiple applications including Ethernet and fiber-to-the-premise setups. It typically includes:

  • MPO fan-out to SC/UPC connectors for connecting multiple fibers.
  • Multiple cable entry points on the top and bottom for input and drop cables.
  • Splice trays (white for general splicing, blue for splitter legs) to organize fiber splices.
  • Aramid restraint kits to provide strain relief for single fiber cables.
  • Gas and water block capabilities using resin packs and tube entry funnels to protect against environmental factors .

Installation Steps

  1. Prepare the Mounting Location
    • Remove the panel cover by gently pushing the tabs inward and sliding it off.
    • Position the panel against the wall and mark the drill points.
    • Drill holes (typically 8mm) and secure the panel with screws, tightening to about 70% to allow final adjustments .
  2. Cable Entry and Strain Relief
    • Insert input cables through the designated top or bottom entry points.
    • Use the Aramid restraint kit to secure single fiber cables, providing up to 8kg of strain relief. Each restraint can hold up to two cables of 2.8mm diameter .
    • Apply resin packs in the gas block entry ports to seal and protect the cables from moisture and gas intrusion.
  3. Splicing and Connectorization
    • Place fibers into the white splice trays for standard splicing or blue trays for splitter legs.
    • Ensure fibers are neatly routed and secured to avoid bending beyond the minimum bend radius.
    • Connect the MPO fan-out to SC/UPC connectors as required for your network setup .
  4. Cable Management
    • Use internal guides and brackets to route fibers cleanly within the panel.
    • Label each fiber and connector to simplify future maintenance and troubleshooting.
    • Avoid tangling or crossing fibers to reduce signal loss and maintain network performance .
  5. Final Checks
    • Verify all splices and connections are secure.
    • Replace the panel cover and ensure it is properly seated.
    • Test the fiber connections using an optical power meter or OTDR to confirm signal integrity.
