Overview of PON

A Passive Optical Network (PON) is a point-to-multipoint fiber network architecture that connects a service provider's central office to multiple end users without requiring powered devices in the field . Unlike traditional point-to-point fiber networks, which require a dedicated fiber for each user, PON uses optical splitters to share a single fiber among many users, reducing infrastructure costs and complexity . This makes PON highly efficient for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), enterprise LANs, and smart-building deployments .

Key Components

  1. Optical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, the OLT sends and receives optical signals to and from multiple users .
  2. Optical Splitters: Passive, unpowered devices that divide the optical signal from the OLT to multiple fibers, enabling one fiber to serve many endpoints .
  3. Optical Network Units (ONUs) / Optical Network Terminals (ONTs): Devices near the end users that receive the split optical signal and convert it into electrical signals for devices like PCs, phones, or set-top boxes .

How PON Works

The OLT transmits a single optical signal through a fiber to a passive splitter. The splitter divides the signal to multiple ONUs/ONTs, which filter and decrypt the data intended for each user . Upstream communication from users is combined by the splitter back to the OLT. This one-to-many topology allows efficient bandwidth sharing while maintaining security and reliability .
