An external optical module is a pluggable device that provides a centralized, serviceable light source for fiber-optic communication, converting electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa.

Overview

An external optical module, often referred to as an external laser source (ELS) module, is designed to operate in high-speed optical networks, including AI and cloud data centers. Unlike integrated optical modules, which house the laser within the switch or ASIC package, external modules centralize the light source, allowing multiple optical engines to share a single high-power laser. This improves system efficiency, thermal management, and serviceability .

Structure and Components

External optical modules share the core structure of standard optical transceivers but are optimized for external deployment:

  • Optical Transmitter (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into modulated optical signals using a laser diode (LD) or LED .
  • Optical Receiver (ROSA): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals via a photodetector .
  • Functional Circuits: Include driver chips, preamplifiers, and automatic power control circuits to maintain signal integrity .
  • Housing and Connectors: Protect internal components and provide interfaces for electrical and optical connections. Dust plugs, latches, and shells ensure secure and contamination-free operation .
  • Thermal Management: Dual-TEC or heat dissipation mechanisms maintain stable performance under high data rates .
