Step 1: Safety and Workspace Preparation

Before starting, ensure a clean, static-free workspace. Wear high-rated safety goggles and cut-resistant shoes to protect against glass shards and the high-temperature fusion arc (~5,000°C) used in splicing. Use anti-static mats or wrist straps to prevent damage to splicer electronics. Verify that all tools, including the fusion splicer, cleaver, and power supply, are clean and functioning properly .

Step 2: Insert Splice Protection Sleeve

Place a heat-shrink splice protection sleeve onto one side of the fiber before splicing. This sleeve cannot be added after fusion, so it must be positioned in advance. Ensure the sleeve is clean and the splicing area is stable .

Step 3: Strip the Fiber Coating

For stubborn residues, use a fiber cleaning pen or optical-grade cleaning fluid. Inspect fiber ends under a microscope or splicer camera to ensure they are free of dust, scratches, or oil .

Step 5: Cleave the Fiber

Use a high-precision fiber cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end face. Proper cleaving is critical for low-loss splicing. Ensure the cleaver is maintained and calibrated for the fiber type being used .

Step 6: Align and Fuse the Fibers

Place the fibers into the fusion splicer. The splicer aligns the fibers using core alignment technology and then applies a controlled electric arc to fuse the fibers together. Follow the splicer's recommended parameters for single-mode or multi-mode fibers. Ensure the environment is free from dust and vibrations during this process .

Step 7: Inspect the Splice

After fusion, inspect the splice using the splicer's built-in microscope or camera. Check for low splice loss and proper alignment. If necessary, re-clean and re-splice to achieve optimal performance .

Step 8: Protect the Splice

Slide the heat-shrink protection sleeve over the fused joint and shrink it using a heat source. This protects the splice from mechanical stress and environmental factors. Proper protection ensures long-term reliability in optical splitter boxes .

Step 9: Organize and Install in Splitter Box

Carefully place the spliced fibers into the splitter box trays, ensuring no sharp bends or stress points. Secure fibers according to the box design to maintain bend radius and prevent microbending losses .
