Concept of Fiber Optic Stress Sensor

Fiber optic stress sensors detect mechanical stress by monitoring changes in light propagation caused by strain or bending in the optical fiber.

Working Principle

Fiber optic stress sensors operate by converting mechanical stress or strain into measurable changes in the optical signal transmitted through the fiber. When stress is applied to the fiber or its supporting structure, it induces microbends, macrobends, or strain, which alter the light intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength traveling through the fiber . These changes are then detected and analyzed to quantify the applied stress.

Key Mechanisms

  1. Microbend and Macrobend Losses In microbend sensors, the optical fiber is periodically bent or compressed within a flexible support. Each bend causes a portion of the guided light to leak out of the fiber, resulting in optical power loss. The magnitude of this loss depends on the bending radius, the spacing of bends, and the fiber's material properties. By measuring the light attenuation, the applied stress or force can be determined .
  2. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors FBG-based stress sensors use a periodic variation in the refractive index along the fiber. When stress or strain is applied, the grating spacing changes, causing a shift in the reflected wavelength. This wavelength shift is proportional to the applied stress, allowing precise measurement .
  3. OTDR-Based Sensors Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) sensors detect stress by analyzing backscattered light along the fiber. Stress-induced bending or strain changes the optical conduction mode, converting part of the guided light into radiative modes. OTDR measures the location and magnitude of energy loss, enabling distributed stress sensing over long distances .

Sensor Configurations

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, directly affected by stress.
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to an external transducer that responds to stress.
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic elements for enhanced sensitivity and flexibility .

Applications

Fiber optic stress sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring, aerospace, civil engineering, and industrial systems due to their high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and ability to perform distributed measurements . They can monitor stress in bridges, pipelines, aircraft components, and even soil or sand environments, providing real-time data for safety and performance optimization .

Summary

The principle of fiber optic stress sensors relies on the interaction between mechanical stress and light propagation in optical fibers. By detecting changes in light intensity, wavelength, or mode distribution caused by bending or strain, these sensors provide accurate, real-time measurements of stress in various materials and structures. Their versatility and robustness make them ideal for applications in harsh or remote environments.
